The final class bell has faded, textbooks are closed, and vacations (and “staycations”) are being planned, which means: In the words of Alice Cooper, “School’s out for summer!”

You may be wondering what steps you can take so your family can have fun all summer long, and we’re here to help. From making the most of your swimming pool, and keeping your kids entertained with some fun activities, to tips that will help you save more energy and water, Liberty has you covered.

Splash into summer

If you have a pool, you can enjoy it while being eco-friendly at the same time by following these tips.

  • Cover your pool when not in use: A pool cover helps reduce water evaporation, and reflective covers can help keep your pool cool, too!
  • Keep your pool clean: A clean pool uses fewer chemicals, and you won’t need to backwash your pool filter as often.
  • Identify and repair leaks: Is your pool’s water level still low? You may have a leak. An ongoing leak can waste hundreds of gallons of water and can be damaging to the environment.

Here are some additional ways to help save water during the summer months:

  • Use the leftover water from your ice chest from that camping trip or backyard barbecue to water the plants around your home.
  • Instead of using a hose to clean your driveway, patio, or sidewalk, try using a broom.
  • Turn off the water while brushing your teeth, washing your hands, or shaving.
  • Do not water your lawn on windy or rainy days.

Fun’s just around the corner

We’ve got you covered with some fun activities to help keep your kids entertained so you can avoid that dreaded summer phrase, “I’m sooooo bored!”

Check out the Kids’ Corner on our website for fun, interactive activities such as eye spy, a water maze, crossword puzzles, and more! There are also fun videos to help your kids (and you) learn how to create an edible aquifer, be safe around electricity, and save water!

Don’t sweat the summer months

Making small changes can add up to big savings. Liberty provides a variety of free programs, workshops, and resources to help you be more energy and water efficient, which may help you save on your utility bills.

Not sure where to start?  Here are some tips to help you save more energy:

  • Turn off lights and appliances when not in use.
  • Vacuum your refrigerator coils, underneath and in the back. They need air space to work more efficiently.
  • Weatherize your home. Small steps like sealing cracks and using weatherization strips can help keep hot air where it’s supposed to be – outside!
