The backpacks are tossed aside, the alarm clocks are taking a break, and summer fun is officially underway. For kids, that means more time outside riding bikes, playing in the yard, helping with projects, and exploring the neighborhood.
For parents, it’s a good time to add one more important thing to the summer checklist: safety.
At Liberty, we know summer often brings more outdoor activity at home, and with that comes a few extra safety reminders worth keeping in mind.
If your family is planning outdoor projects this season, make safety the first step. Whether you’re planting a tree, putting up a fence, or starting another backyard improvement project, always call 811 before digging so underground utility lines can be marked. It’s free, easy, and it can help prevent service interruptions, costly repairs, and serious injuries.
Summer is also a great time to remind kids about electrical safety. Children should never climb on or play near pad-mounted transformers — those green metal utility boxes you may see in neighborhoods — and they should avoid placing toys, bikes, or other items near them. Families with younger children are encouraged to use outlet covers and keep fingers, metal objects, and moisture away from outlets.
Water safety is another important reminder during the summer months, especially for families with young children.

Whether kids are playing in sprinklers, visiting local pools, or spending time at lakes and rivers, it’s important to always keep a close eye on them. Make sure children understand basic water safety rules, such as never swimming alone and always listening to lifeguards or adults. It’s also a good idea for kids to wear properly fitted life jackets when boating or near open water.
Stormy summer weather can create additional hazards. If your family sees a downed power line, stay far away and assume it is energized. Remain at least 30 feet away – about the length of an average school bus – and report the hazard immediately. It’s also important to remind children never to touch a downed line or anything that may be in contact with it, such as a tree limb.
And if you’re looking for an easy way to turn safety into something engaging for kids, Liberty’s Kids Corner resources include activities and lessons that help children learn about electrical, gas, and water safety in age-friendly ways.
A little extra awareness can go a long way toward helping your family enjoy a safe, fun-filled summer. School may be out, but safety is always worth keeping in mind!
